Day 36: Author Boy on Holiday; Still Tinkering
Michelle's fortnight holiday starts today, so I'm taking a break as well. All the same today I spent a couple of hours downloading a heap of new notes and ideass for UMBRA that burst unannounced into my head late last night, keeping from sleeping. By the time I got it all down it turned out to be more than 1700 words just of notes, and included lots of material for the middle act of the story, and some promising ideas for what should happen beyond that.
Currently the manuscript itself is up to 38,500 words, but once I get back to the scribble it looks like I'll be cutting about 3500 words, which cover events that now need extensive changes. This rewriting effort over the past couple of weeks has been going well, and has resulted in significant improvements in the story that I'm pretty happy about.
I realise this is hardly the most exciting thing to read about. Then again, I'm feeling rather excited about all the new developments.
I will probably be posting here and there during this week about probably non-writing-related stuff.

Jen--Michelle's work situation is that she gets four weeks' holiday per year, but she often doesn't use it all up. As a result, it has a way of piling up into huge quantities of time. Lately her employer at the Blood Mines has started dropping stern hints to the effect that Michelle Really Should Take More Holidays, because it screws up their accounts if she doesn't. And not just her, either. So you could say she's pretty much being forced to take two weeks off.
She also has huge amounts of sick leave piled up, to say nothing of all her long service leave, most of which she hasn't used yet.
This all sounds good, I know. Thing is, work conditions in Australia are about to be changed all to buggery, with the government planning to bring in loads of new legislation to "reform" the system. Michelle figures she might as well use her holiday time while she still has it, if you catch my drift. :(

It IS good news, old bean. I've been stalled on my current novel myself, partially due to extensive work relating to that special project I told you about. (we hope to have it ready by Oct.15/05)
Enjoy your holiday, hugs to Michelle and scratches to Pixel.
